A recent report by Reuters shows that women drivers are a growing group in the ranks of professional over the road truckers. In 1983 there were approximately 84,000 women drivers on the road. Today the number of women drivers has climbed to 182,000 or 5.2 percent of the total driving force.

Why are more women opting for life on the road as a professional truck driver? The U.S. trucking industry has a shortage of drivers and trucking companies are looking beyond the traditional male driver demographic. Marge Bailey of LadyTruckDrivers.com says “Many truck companies are champing at the bit to hire women.” Celadon Group chief executive Steve Russell says thirteen percent of Celadon’s drivers are women and he is looking to hire more.

Advances in big truck technology make the handling of an 18 wheeler much easier than in years past with better power steering and automatic transmissions. Over the road trucking is one of the few industries where sex does not matter when it comes to pay. Drivers are paid by the mile – the more they drive and deliver the more they make.
