On Tuesday, September 11th, the Senate voted to ban Mexican truck from operating on U.S. roads.  The Senate approved a bill proposed by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., by a margin of 74-24 that prohibits the Transportation Department from “…spending money on a North American Free Trade Agreement pilot progam giving Mexican trucks greater access to U.S. highways.”

Specifically, the amendment stipulates that “None of the funds made available under this Act may be used to establish a cross-border motor carrier demonstration program to allow Mexico domiciled motor carriers to operate beyond the commercial zones along the international border between the United States and Mexico.” Read entire statement by Sen. Byron Dorgan.

It is reported that President Bush has said he will veto the bill but James Hoffa, president of the Teamsters Union says allies in Congress likely have the votes needed to override the threatened veto that would require Mexican trucks operating in the United States to meet U.S. Standards.
